All fans attending the pre-season hockey game on Monday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Target Center featuring the New York Rangers and the Phoenix Coyotes are asked to donate their used or extra hockey equipment to the Ramsey County and Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. The donated hockey equipment will allow more children the opportunity to play hockey in Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Fans who are unable to attend the pre-season game can drop off their used or extra hockey equipment at any of the Ramsey County or Minneapolis Parks and Recreation ice arenas. "The Minnesota Wild is proud to be a part of the great efforts of the Ramsey County Parks and Recreation Department, the City of Saint Paul and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Boards to obtain hockey equipment to allow more children the ability to play hockey," said Minnesota Wild CEO Jac Sperling. "The underlying component of our Grass Roots Hockey Initiative is to provide more boys and girls at all levels the opportunity to learn, participate and enjoy the sport of hockey." "Our biggest need is helmets and skates, but in reality, we'll take all the youth skating equipment people can bring," added Jody Yungers of the Ramsey County Parks and Recreation Department. "We know this equipment is out there," said Ramsey County Commissioner Dino Guerin, "I really think people will want to dig out a pair of skates or helmet their children have outgrown." "The Minnesota Wild is showing the kind of corporate leadership programs like this need. Government can't do it alone. With a program like this, we need help from the business community and the Wild is really showing they want to be a player in this community," added Guerin. The Ramsey County Parks and Recreation Department operates over 6,000 acres of parkland, four golf courses and a golf dome, ten ice arenas and Tamarack Nature Center. A variety of hockey, figure skating, speed skating, broomball and public skating programs are hosted in Ramsey County ice arenas. "Because we are sure the need for hockey equipment is out there, it is heartening to work with other agencies and organizations to give these youth the opportunity to play hockey," said Jack Palmer of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. There are approximately 50 recreation centers that service Minneapolis youth. These centers include playgrounds, swimming pools, indoor ice arenas, golf courses, tennis courts, parkways, picnic grounds, and jogging, walking and bike paths.
