WILD NAMES GUY LAPOINTE SCOUT
[September 15, 1999] -- Minnesota Wild Executive Vice President/General Manager Doug Risebrough (pronounced Rise-brow) announced today the National Hockey League (NHL) club has named Guy Lapointe as a Scout. Lapointe, 51 (3/18/48), will be responsible for scouting and evaluating talent in all amateur and professional leagues. He will work closely with Chief Amateur Scout Tom Thompson, and report directly to Risebrough. "Guy Lapointe is a winner. He has won at every level of hockey," said Risebrough. "His understanding of the game and his ability to evaluate talent make him an excellent addition to the Wild staff." Lapointe joins the Wild staff after spending the previous nine seasons (1990-99) with the NHL's Calgary Flames. He served as a scout for the Flames for seven seasons (1990-1995, 1997-1999) and as an assistant coach for two seasons (1995-1997). Prior to his tenure with Calgary, Lapointe served as an assistant coach for five seasons (1987-1990, 1984-1985) for the NHL's Quebec Nordiques (Colorado Avalanche). The Montreal, Quebec native served two seasons (1985-1987) as General Manager and Head Coach of the Longueuil Chevaliers of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. As a player, Lapointe played 16 NHL seasons (1968-1984) and was a member of six Stanley Cup championship teams with the Montreal Canadiens. The four-time All-Star was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993. He currently resides in Calgary, Alberta with his wife Louise and three children Jordan, Stephanie and Guy Jr. Lapointe will begin his new role with the Wild immediately. MINNESOTA WILD NAMES TOM THOMPSON CHIEF AMATEUR SCOUT[September 15, 1999] -- Minnesota Wild Executive Vice President/General Manager Doug Risebrough (pronounced Rise-brow) announced today the National Hockey League (NHL) club has named Tom Thompson Chief Amateur Scout. Thompson, 46 (6/24/53), will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the club's amateur scouting department. He will also play a large role in the organization's preparation for and the selection of players at next June's NHL Entry Draft. The 15-year NHL scouting veteran will work closely with and report directly to Risebrough. "Tom Thompson's extensive scouting background makes him an outstanding choice for Chief Amateur Scout," said Risebrough. "Tom's experience as a scout and work ethic will lay the foundation for the future success of the Minnesota Wild." Thompson joins the Wild staff after spending the past two years (1997-99) as a scout for the NHL's Edmonton Oilers. His scouting duties with the Oilers covered college, major junior and international hockey. Prior to his tenure with Edmonton, he served twelve years with the NHL's Calgary Flames, the last three years (1994-97) as the Director of Amateur Scouting after serving nine years (1985-94) as a scout for the organization. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native obtained a law degree from the University of Manitoba and practiced as a litigation lawyer from 1976 - 1995. He currently resides in Calgary, Alberta with his wife Linda and their two sons, Paul and Eric. Thompson will begin his new role with the organization immediately. |
